Thank you for visiting the website of the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada. We are a voluntary association of First Nations, Inuit and Métis medical students, residents and physicians, with members learning and working all across the country. We also have a growing affiliate membership: Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations and people who share and contribute to our vision. Our vision is healthy and vibrant Indigenous nations, communities, families and individuals supported by an abundance of knowledgeable, well-educated, well-supported Indigenous physicians working together with others who share this vision.

At the end of November we gathered in Montreal for our 5th meeting as the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada. Many of our sessions and workshops focused on leadership: IPAC’s role in Indigenous health in this country continues to grow and we need to support our members in developing their capacity to provide transformational leadership. We need to ensure the ongoing strong leadership in our medical education and medical workforce development activities, as well develop our potential to influence emerging areas such as the Indigenous Social Determinants of Health in Canada.

The next two years will be exciting and busy for IPAC. Later this year I hope that we will host our first ever meeting in Nunavut, and use the opportunity to promote health careers among Inuit youth. We hope to host some type of forum where our members can learn from and engage with traditional medical practitioners, and explore ways we can collaborate to advance our vision. In August 2010 we will host a meeting of the Pacific Region Indigenous Doctors Congress, where we will welcome our Indigenous brothers and sisters from Australia, Hawaii, New Zealand, the US, Taiwan, and hopefully others.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada, as well as our growing number of partners: we value the contributions of all of them to the work we share.

Again, I’d like to thank you for visiting our website, and invite you to return often to explore the site and stay up to date on IPAC’s activities.  If you would like more information, please contact us.

In peace,
Marcia Anderson, MD, MPH, FRCPC
